Organize Your Photo Collection on Your iPhone & iPad

Here’s how to create structure to your photo collection by organizing your photos and videos into folders, subfolders and albums in your Photos app on your iPhone and iPad.

Folders and subfolders contain albums. Albums contain groups of photos and videos. Subfolders are a great way to subdivide folders into more specific categories.

Below is an example of how to structure a photo collection:

Create a Folder

  1. Tap ALBUMS (at bottom of Photos app)

  2. Tap + (plus icon)

  3. Tap NEW FOLDER

  4. Type folder name, then tap SAVE


Create One or More Subfolders

  1. In Albums, tap a folder name

  2. Tap EDIT

  3. Tap + (plus icon)

  4. Tap NEW FOLDER

  5. Type folder name, then tap SAVE

  6. Repeat Step #3 to create additional subfolders

  7. Tap DONE


Create Album(s) within a Folder/Subfolder

  1. Tap ALBUMS (at bottom of Photos app)

  2. Tap SEE ALL

  3. Tap the folder name

  4. Tap the subfolder name (if applicable)

  5. Tap EDIT

  6. Tap + (plus icon)

  7. Tap NEW ALBUM

  8. Type album name, than tap SAVE

  9. Select photos (or skip this step and add photos later which is my recommendation)

  10. Tap DONE

  11. (Optional) Repeat Steps #6 — #10 to create additional albums

  12. Tap DONE


Use Keyword Search to Find Specific Photos & Videos to Add to Your Albums

To locate specific photos and videos in your photos library, search using keywords. Apple has designed the Photos app to recognize thousands of objects and scenes. After you’ve located your photos and videos, save them to your newly created albums so you can find them easily later. Learn how here.
